What I collect
When you sign up on this site, I collect:
- Your email address (required).
- Your ZIP code, only if you choose to enter it.
- The consent text you agreed to, the date and time you signed up, your browser’s user-agent string, and the country your connection came from (as reported by Cloudflare).
Each time you submit the form, I keep that submission. A later submission does not replace a confirmed signup until you confirm the new email.
Where it’s stored
Signups are stored in a private Cloudflare database controlled by Dick Lucas. Cloudflare hosts this website and the database. The list is not public.
How I use it
To email you updates about homelessness in Santa Monica, City Council meetings, and the election. You can unsubscribe from any email.
Signing up sends a confirmation email to the address you entered. You are confirmed only after you open that link and press the button. The link expires after 7 days and works once. I store a hash of the link, not the link itself. If you did not sign up, ignore the email.
Sharing
I never sell or share your info.
Security and spam protection
To limit spam signups, the site keeps a salted, one-way hash of your IP address and a timestamp for each signup attempt. Your actual IP address is not stored. These records are deleted after about 24 hours. A hidden field on the form helps catch bots.
The form also uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person submitted it. The check runs in your browser and is verified on the server before anything is saved. The Turnstile token is not stored. Turnstile may set a cookie while it runs that check.
This site does not set cookies or use ad trackers. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-friendly tool that counts visits without cookies and without tracking you across other sites.
